Description

Polyethylene terephthalate glycol, commonly known as PETG or PET-G, is a thermoplastic polyester that delivers significant chemical resistance, durability and formability for manufacturing.

PETG offers excellent strength and durability, as well as high impact resistance and suitability for higher temperatures. Its low forming temperature allows it to be easily vacuum formed, pressure formed or heat bent.

These properties make PETG suitable for 3D printing and other heat-forming processes. It is also well suited to fabrication techniques such as bending, die-cutting and routing.

Main Features

  • For indoor application only
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.1315 compliant in the United States and suitable for use with food products, except for the UV variation
  • Ductile, with elongation to breaking similar to that of polycarbonate
  • High impact strength, close to that of polycarbonate
  • Excellent transparency and surface brightness
  • Available with UV protection
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Reduces noise transmission
  • Easily thermoformable
  • Sterilisable
  • Recyclable

Ageing and Exterior Applications

The UV component of sunlight causes degradation to plastics. The extent of degradation depends on the exposure conditions, including:

  • Duration of exposure to sunlight
  • Sheet inclination to the sun’s rays
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Sunlight intensity
  • Geographical location

Degradation can appear as progressive yellowing, reduced light transmission and a loss of mechanical properties.

For exterior applications where the sheets are permanently exposed to ultraviolet light, a stabilised product such as UV-protected sheets is recommended. UV sheets are protected on both sides.

When used in exterior applications, the protective film must be removed immediately, as exposure to sunlight can cause the film to adhere permanently to the sheet.

Transformation and Fabrication

  • Does not whiten when cold-bent up to 2.5mm
  • Can be cut with a guillotine
  • Can be easily sawn
  • Can be easily edged
  • Can be easily drilled without burring
  • Easily welded, including with PVC
  • Surface scratches can be removed with a hot-air gun
  • Can be laser-cut
  • Can be polished using the same diamond-buffing tools used for acrylic sheets

Dimensional Stability to Heat

Articles manufactured from PETG must not be exposed to continuous-use temperatures exceeding 60°C.
